Our Diagnostic Process
After inspecting the tractor, we traced the issue to leaking valve stem seals, which were allowing oil to pass through and burn off in the exhaust.
The Repair: Cylinder Head Overhaul and Valve Adjustment
To resolve the issue, we carried out the following steps:
- Removing the Cylinder Head: We removed the cylinder head to access the faulty valve stem seals.
- Replacing Valve Stem Seals: The old, worn seals were replaced with new ones to prevent further oil leakage.
- Lapping the Valves: We lapped the valves to ensure a proper seal and optimal engine performance.
- Fitting a New Head Gasket: A new head gasket was installed to ensure a secure and leak-free fit.
- Reassembling and Torquing: The cylinder head was refitted and torqued to the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Adjusting the Tappets: As the tractor is over 40 years old and had never had its tappets adjusted, we took the opportunity to fine-tune them for optimal performance.
The Result: Restored Performance
After completing the repairs, the International 574 started and ran like it did 40 years ago. The oil leakage issue was resolved, and the customer was thrilled to see their vintage tractor performing as it should.
