The Problem: Gearbox Jammed and Gearstick Flopping
A customer contacted us while out in the field checking on their cows. They reported that their Ford 4000 had come to a halt when attempting to change gear. The gearbox appeared to be jammed in gear, and the gearstick was flopping around, making it impossible to operate the tractor.
Our Diagnostic Process
We promptly went out to the field to assess the issue. After removing the top cover of the gearbox, we discovered that the gearstick had come out of the selector due to wear and tear.
The Repair: Temporary Fix to Keep the Tractor Running
To get the customer back up and running as quickly as possible, we carried out the following steps:
- Welding the Gearstick: We welded the worn section of the gearstick to restore its functionality.
- Machining the Gearstick: After welding, we machined the gearstick back down to the correct size and shape to ensure it fit securely in the selector.
- Reassembling the Gearbox: The top cover was refitted, and the gearbox was tested to ensure smooth operation.
This temporary repair allowed the customer to continue using their tractor while we sourced a replacement gearstick for a permanent fix.
The Result: Tractor Back in Action
Thanks to the quick repair, the Ford 4000 was back in action, allowing the customer to carry on with their work without significant downtime. The temporary fix ensured the tractor remained operational until the new gearstick could be fitted.
